My Freshman Year
Nathan wrote the information in chapter 3 in a way that is relative to students. I say this because the entire time I was reading I compared it to my freshman year. When I was an entering freshman I had to complete a summer reading assignment just like Nathan described in the reading. Personally, when I read the email about the summer reading assignment I was annoyed. I didn’t want to complete it and I thought it was a dumb idea. As always I waited till the last minute, but once I began the assignment I found myself liking it. In addition to this students do not always like what they are asked to complete because it might sound boring or not interesting to us. However as a sophomore I have learned to stop judging what I am asked to complete before I know all about it. I think the students in "My Freshman Year" could compare to what I stated above. As students we tend to enjoy things that relate to us, that is why I enjoyed the summer reading assignment and "My freshman Year." The part where Nathan talks about the RAs wanting the students to bond was not a surprise to me. When someone comes up with an idea, like having a movie night it sounds fun. However when the time comes we skip the event, why? I think it is because we are all students and have busy lives. Therefore maybe something better came up that same night. In my own opinion I think the RA wants to be an organizer one day and her trying to organize an event for the students is her way of practicing for her future.
Mind at Work The introduction “Mind at Work”, I found to be an attention grabber. I liked how the author told a story but at the same time taught a lesson to the readers. The lesson that the author delivered to us readers is that work is not just handed to you. We must work hard for what we want and show that we are trying to succeed. The author also made it clear that when you have a job you must be a good worker, like the uncle and mother in the story. The message that the author tried to put across to the readers was educational and interesting. I think the author wrote the story the way he did because the people he talked about means a lot to him and he looks up to them. What I mean by that is he seems to be a family person who wants to try his best so he can make his family proud.
